Powerflushing . Is it worth it ?

Power flushing is it worth it ?  As a company that offers power flushing our obvious answer is yes, but there has been quite a few occasions where customers have been told they NEED their system flushing and don’t . Some of the big boy companies & some of the small ones  also prey on customers lack of knowledge and use scare tactics ” your boiler could block up ” , “your radiators will stop working” is just a few you could hear just to pry some money out of people.

What is a Powerflush?

A Power flush is a cleansing process which aims to remove deposits of sludge, rust and any other debris from your central heating system using a power flushing machine and a chemical additive.

These deposits  can  affect the efficiency of a heating system and, in really bad cases, a power flush could be the only viable option. Over time the water in your pipes, boiler and radiators deposits unwanted byproducts like rust. This rust plus other dirt becomes a mud-like substance that professionals affectionately refer to as ‘sludge’.

Sludge in your heating system can cause to blockages and corrosion which will lead to both inefficiency and / or breakdown.

Does my central heating system need a Power Flush?

If your central heating system has any of the following symptoms, it probably needs a POWER FLUSH:

  • Radiator water is dirty
  • System is slow to heat up
  • Radiators need frequent bleeding
  • Boiler failure or lockout
  • Boiler noise
  • Pump failure
  • Pump noise
  • Some radiators are partially or completely cold
  • Blocked radiators
  • Pinhole leaks from radiators

It is recommended that a system is flushed prior to fitting a new boiler, some manufacturers insist they are carried out as part of their warranty policies.

The benefits of powerflushing

The result of power flushing is that the boiler and the rest of the central heating system become more efficient. This basically occurs because there is better circulation through the system and the boiler doesn’t have to work as hard to warm the house and water. Therefore the overall result is that you save money on your gas bills.

Conclusion

Is power flushing worth it? It depends on how badly affected your heating system is. If the whole system is showing signs of bad circulation or you notice more than one of the signs above then a power flush will probably be worth the money you pay. If, however, only a few radiators are suffering from cold spots then it will posiibly be much quicker and cheaper to take the radiators off the wall and flush them separately.
